It all started with a book by Cynthia McLeod. That book was followed by more books, then a joke with my mother and before long I was in a plane with my mother heading to Suriname.
I had no opinions about Suriname and very little information other than what I was told, and that was mostly negative. Things from "primitive" to "it's like going to slums". "Expensive". "Mosquitoes". "Too hot". "Dirty".
I couldn't have had a better time. I quite simply had the best vacation in a long time. It was so incredibly beautiful. The big trees rising from the gorges. The river flowing seemingly endless past the jungle. The old plantations. The flowers. Hearing baboons roar.An inmense man made lake. The food was delicious. DELICIOUS. The people were almost all extremely friendly and helpful. And so POLITE. Good manners is very much underrated.
We stayed at the Eco Resort, a beautiful small hotel with a very good location in the city and beautiful flora. We used two tour operators: Mets and Suriname on Tour. Mets was very professional, but Suriname on Tour was the superior one, especially in flexibility and meeting our wishes. My mother and I were afraid that we were going to be bored, but nothing could be further from the truth. We saw quite a bit, and still only a little part of Suriname.
Here is a little album of some of the sites.
